Wild weather today!
This morning we saw the first ever tornado warning issued for San Francisco. Seeing many reports of wind and water damage around NorCal today.
A tornado may not have actually touched down in SF but, with the direction the climate is going, I'm glad to know our alerting systems work.
Take it from those of us in fire country and who have friends and family who've lost houses, loved ones, and more to delayed alerts: it's far better to err on the side of caution.
Well, that is unusual. Here's the earlier tornado warning (now expired) for San Francisco. Everyone up there okay?
So the most appropriate answer, at this point, is "we don't have enough info to give a high confidence answer." However, my own professional view is that while severe thunderstorms will remain rare-ish in CA, they will indeed become more common w/ #ClimateChange. #CAwx [7/7]
Is there a #ClimateChange aspect here? Well, there are *zero* studies of which I'm aware looking specifically at severe convective risk in CA in a warming climate. But we do know that surface instability (CAPE) broadly increases w/warming, including in CA. #CAwx [6/7]
Occasionally, when we do see winter storms w/even modest instability by "Tornado Alley" standards, they can generate severe t-storms & bring damaging winds, torrential downpours, and even occasionally waterspouts/brief tornadoes. We saw this often in 2022-23 winter. #CAwx [5/7]
In CA, the missing ingredient for severe t-storms & related phenomena, like tornadoes, is usually atmospheric instability (i.e., strong buoyancy of the air in the lower atmosphere)--not wind shear. Winter storms often bring wind shear, but usually little instability. #CAwx [4/7]
In 2005, for example, an EF1 tornado occurred in South Francisco, causing some notable damage. Other more significant tornado events have occurred elsewhere in the Bay Area and NorCal; although rare, they are not unprecedented. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/south-san-francisco-wild-weather-sunday-s-2690690.php #CAwx [3/7]
2) So far as I know, this was indeed first such warning ever issued for SF proper (but not first tornado in SF!). Other similar warnings have been issued elsewhere in Bay Area under similar conditions (i.e., offshore waterspout potentially moving ashore as tornado). #CAwx [2/7]
We've got a heavy storm with high wind and rain whipping through #Monterey #California right now. I was woken up by some thunder a little bit ago.
Hopefully all of the sea otters are wearing their kelp seatbelts out in the bay
Trying to check on friends in #SF and #Vancouver this morning, and pulled up Ventusky to see this.
Holy cow, folks, hold onto something. Preferably something somewhat off the ground.

Storm surge from southerly winds and large surf will cause King Tides to be higher than predicted. This will cause salt water flooding of areas that normally remain dry during high tide on Saturday. Areas at risk are low lying areas along the immediate coast. Avoid driving through flooded roads.

Posted on December 13, 2024, 12:20 PM
University officials continue to monitor the Franklin Fire, which poses no further threat to the Malibu campus. Fire officials have continued the process of repopulating Malibu and have reopened roads.
Normal operations on the Malibu campus are scheduled to resume for faculty and staff next week, and campus events are resuming this weekend. Please review the University events calendar for the latest updates. The air quality in Malibu is good and has returned to normal levels.

Residents returning to their homes in repopulation zones can do so with confidence that these areas have been thoroughly inspected by agencies and deemed safe. However, all residents are urged to remain cautious and follow instructions from public safety officials. For guidance on staying safe in burn areas and proper use of protective equipment, residents are encouraged to visit: http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Wildfire/.
Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is now open with traffic moving in both directions.
